On April 23, 2004, a German utility model was published under the number DE202004006595, which describes the radar-controlled marking of wind turbines. This idea was developed by the lighting supplier ENERTRAG Systemtechnik, and since 2007 it has been examined in various industry-wide studies.
In 2014, ENERTRAG Systemtechnik received recognition from German Air Traffic Control for its airspex system and, immediately after publication of the legal framework in 2015, put the Langenhorn project into operation as the first German BNK project. airspex GmbH was founded as a subsidiary for the operation of further BNK projects, which was converted into a full BNK service provider in 2018 with new shareholders under the name Dark Sky.
